If you are a student looking for a Georgia Title IX lawyer, this page links our guides to six Georgia universities and explains what their processes share and where they differ. Each university runs its own process under its own policy documents. The written notice you receive, and the policy version it names, control your case.

Each guide below covers one school in more detail. Use this page to find the right guide, then read your notice against it.

How Georgia universities handle Title IX cases

Five of the six schools on this page tie their student sexual misconduct process to one system policy: USG Board of Regents Policy 6.7, Sexual Misconduct Policy, published by the University System of Georgia (USG) on PolicyStat and effective December 12, 2025. They are Georgia Gwinnett College, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Georgia Tech and the University of West Georgia.

Policy 6.7 sets several shared steps. After you receive written notice of the allegations, you have at least three business days to respond in writing. Decisions use a preponderance of the evidence standard. Policy 6.7 also separates Title IX sexual harassment cases from other sexual misconduct cases at the hearing. In a Title IX hearing, an advisor asks the questions, and the school provides one if you do not have one. In other sexual misconduct hearings, questions are submitted in writing to the hearing officer.

The schools still differ in ways that matter:

  • Georgia Tech has its own Resolution Procedures, effective September 16, 2026. They count evidence review and hearing notice periods in business days, while Policy 6.7 states those periods in calendar days.
  • GGC’s own Policy 4.1.7 sends hearings, sanctions and appeals to Board Policy 4.6.5, while the current Policy 6.7 has its own student hearing and appeal rules.
  • UWG’s Sexual Misconduct procedure adopts Policy 6.7 by reference and says the latest Board policy decides any conflict.
  • Some campus documents still refer to the former Board Policy 4.6.5, including Georgia Southern’s 2026-27 Student Code and UWG’s Student Grievances page.
  • The University of North Georgia’s policy index links a local Sexual Misconduct Policy, the USG Sexual Misconduct Policy and a Student Code that requires a login. Our UNG guide does not state which version governs a current case.

Georgia university guides

  • Georgia Gwinnett College: Covers the process for GGC students in Lawrenceville. Two sets of rules apply: GGC Policy 4.1.7, Title IX/Sexual Misconduct Policy, and USG Board of Regents Policy 6.7. GGC documents name different appeal recipients and start points. See the school page for appeal timing.
  • Georgia Southern University: Georgia Southern’s sexual misconduct page identifies Policy 6.7 as the governing policy for student cases. Under Section 6.7.7(B), an appeal of a final written decision is due within five business days of that decision, to the President or designee. Section 6.7.2(F) gives a right to appeal a dismissal but states no filing deadline, so check the dismissal notice.
  • Georgia State University: Georgia State follows the Board of Regents Sexual Misconduct Policy, incorporated into its Student Code of Conduct. Policy 6.7 gives five business days from the date of the final written decision to appeal an outcome to the President or designee. For a dismissal appeal, see the school page for appeal timing.
  • Georgia Tech: Georgia Tech’s Sexual Misconduct Policy was revised in November 2025 to comply with Policy 6.7, and its Resolution Procedures for Alleged Violations of the Sexual Misconduct Policy set the step-by-step rules. An earlier version of those procedures, effective January 12, 2026, differs on dismissal appeal grounds and sanctions. Georgia Tech’s documents differ on appeal deadlines and recipients. See the school page for appeal timing.
  • University of North Georgia: Explains where UNG’s current policy links are and what to ask the Title IX office. Older UNG pages give different time limits, so the guide does not restate a deadline. See the school page for appeal timing, and confirm any deadline with UNG’s Title IX office.
  • University of West Georgia: Covers the process for UWG students in Carrollton. UWG’s Sexual Misconduct procedure sends student respondent investigations, hearings and appeals to Sections 6.7.5, 6.7.6 and 6.7.7 of Policy 6.7. Other UWG documents route appeals differently. See the school page for appeal timing.

Common questions

Do the Georgia universities on this page follow the same policy?

Not entirely. Five of the six guides describe Policy 6.7 as the main system policy, but each school adds its own documents, and some campus pages still cite the former Board Policy 4.6.5. The UNG guide does not confirm which version applies. Your notice should name the policy used in your case.

Is the appeal deadline the same everywhere?

No. Policy 6.7 sets five business days from the final written decision for an outcome appeal, and the Georgia Southern and Georgia State guides use that figure. At Georgia Tech, GGC and UWG, the schools’ own documents name different recipients or start points, and the UNG guide does not state a deadline. Dismissal appeals follow separate rules. Use the deadline in your own decision letter or dismissal notice.

What should I check first in my notice?

Look for the policy and procedure it names, whether your case is being handled as Title IX sexual harassment or as other sexual misconduct, and any deadline it states. The version that applies can depend on when the incident happened and when the notice was issued. If anything is unclear, ask the school’s Title IX office in writing.

Can my advisor be a lawyer?

Yes. Policy 6.7 allows an advisor of your choice, who may be an attorney, at your own expense.
