If you are a student or parent looking for an Alabama Title IX lawyer after a university notice, this page links to the school guides on this site for five Alabama universities. Each guide explains that university’s posted process for a student respondent, meaning the accused student.

Each university runs its own process under its own policy. The written notice you receive, and the policy version it names, control your case.

How Alabama universities handle Title IX cases

UAB and the University of Alabama are separate campuses of The University of Alabama System. Each has its own Title IX Office, policy, and procedures. For UAB, the System’s Board Rule 203 leaves supervision of students to the campus president and does not set Title IX steps, deadlines, or a board level appeal.

Two differences show why the school page matters.

First, the standard of proof is not the same. At the University of South Alabama, the committee at a sexual harassment hearing decides under a clear and convincing standard. Auburn and UAB use a preponderance of the evidence standard, which asks what is more likely than not.

Second, the hearing looks different. At the University of Alabama, Auburn, South Alabama, and UAB, an advisor asks the other side’s questions at the hearing, and the parties do not question each other directly. At Troy, for charges that could lead to suspension or expulsion, the student handbook gives the accused student a right to cross-examine adverse witnesses but limits counsel to giving advice during the hearing.

Some conduct can also go down a second route. Auburn can use its Policy Against Discrimination and Harassment, UAB its Student Conduct Code, and at Troy the Title IX grievance and Standards of Conduct discipline can run side by side.

Alabama university guides

  • Auburn University: Auburn uses its Title IX Sexual Harassment Policy, effective February 27, 2026, and a live hearing is the default unless both parties agree to administrative adjudication. Auburn’s policy and its respondent FAQ word the appeal deadline differently, so see the school page for appeal timing.
  • Troy University: Troy’s process is in The Oracle, its student handbook, and the only edition linked on Troy’s Oracle page as of September 25, 2026 was the 2024-2025 edition. The Oracle does not say whether its conduct appeal days are calendar or business days, so see the school page for appeal timing.
  • University of Alabama: The University of Alabama uses its Title IX and Sexual Misconduct Policy, revised August 2026, and, where it has jurisdiction, sends formal complaints with allegations such as sexual assault, dating or domestic violence, or stalking through Procedure 1, which leads to a live hearing unless the case is resolved informally. Procedure 1 gives seven calendar days after a hearing determination issues to file an appeal on the Title IX Office form, and the policy gives three calendar days after a dismissal decision to appeal a dismissal. Confirm both against your own notice.
  • University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB): UAB uses its Title IX Policy and its Title IX Procedures for the Resolution of Sexual Harassment Complaints, both listed as effective October 1, 2024, and a single Hearing Officer decides responsibility and any sanction. An older policy version with different appeal terms is still posted in UAB’s Student Handbook, so see the school page for appeal timing.
  • University of South Alabama: South Alabama uses Policy No. 2068, Sexual Misconduct & Complaint Resolution, which holds both the policy and its Complaint Resolution Procedures, and student hearings go to the Student Conduct and Accountability Committee. The student handbook prints an earlier version of the policy, and the current policy does not describe a dismissal appeal, so see the school page for appeal timing.

Common questions

Is the appeal deadline the same at every Alabama school?

No. The documents use different windows, different starting events, and in some cases different day counts. The University of Alabama’s Procedure 1 counts its hearing appeal in calendar days, while UAB’s 2024 procedures define business days to exclude weekends and UAB designated holidays. Use the deadline stated in your own notice and the document it names.

What should I check first in my notice?

Check which policy and which version the notice names, and whether you are in the Title IX process or a separate conduct process. Versions matter here. Auburn’s policy allows revisions to be applied to an active case, South Alabama and UAB still post older versions in their student handbooks, and the only Troy handbook linked is the 2024-2025 edition. Ask the office that sent the notice which version governs, and write down every date the notice gives.
